Star Trek - The Motion Picture - 2001 Director's cut DVD vs. 2022 Director's Cut Blu-ray - part 3
Honestly…look at TV actors from that time and then compare them to this ensemble cast….Star Trek was hand downs the best
I think that this is labelled incorrectly, looks to me that the Director's Cut is the top one.
No, top is theatrical version (2009 Blu-ray), bottom is Director's cut (2001 DVD)
@@TrekkieChannel - Oh I thought it was the 2022 Director's cut, my mistake.
@@darkoz1692 Yeah, this is an old video :-) I have also comparisons of the 2022 versions, check the newest videos on this channel.
Well that was fascinating.
The stop motion bugs should have been redone over anything else. They looked fake
The directors cut matches the version I taped off TV in the 80s.
Although this is a beautiful piece of music in its own right im glad Wise got Goldsmith to rework the score, it really worked out in the end.
Also prefer the older "stairs" effect, the new one looks like a very typical modern CGI/cideogame "spawning in" effect. Also worth mentioning the inconsistent colour grading on the stairs - in the shot at 4:25, the original ones look more grey and the new ones look blue, but then in the next shot at 4:34 the original ones look more blue (in fact the whole shot does) and the new one looks grey.
It's one of the strongest episodes for the first season of TNG - which was still pretty sketchy, as it was still finding its way with bringing in a new Star Trek series. I love the creepiness in certain scenes(when Riker is attacked by the admiral, the dinner scene with Picard and then the final confrontation with Remmick and the creature). I do love they didn't hold back - and also with the gore in the unedited scene. It's a real same there was no follow-up for the creatures used in this story, at least not until the DS9 novels.
Star Trek meets Alien! That is what this episode is!
It's not just that the CGI Enterprise looks bad (which it does), it's that they couldn't resist the temptation to mess around with the shot compositions. I know some people like the CGI (or at least don't hate it) but personally I'm dumbfounded that anyone approved that garbage! (Not meaning any disrepect to the artists who worked on it - I'm sure they were under time and budget pressure and were in over their heads.)
No one seems to mention that due to David ‘s condition, his voice runs an octave or two above Saul’s. Since we are tuned as humans to a wider vocal key range when cueing emotions, it puts David at a great disadvantage, especially when trying to balance ‘menacing’ with ‘curiosity’. Which is the key to coming across as a sociopathic character. It’s like trying to play an acoustic guitar piece on a mandolin--no matter how well it is done it always has ‘that thing’ In this case, vocal inflection range With that said, I do feel like Saul’s performance was superior. and I hope David found Love in the afterlife
Scrolling through the comment section, i can now say that nostalgia is truly a disease for some people. I still enjoy watching many of these old episodes from the original series, but many of them looked very dated. There's nothing wrong with adding a little touch-up here and there. It's not ruining anything.
The left looks better than DS9
It bothers me when the new fans comment on how nice the effects were way back then, very modern. Sadly they are missing out on the original experience we all had back then; all this done practical and on a ridiculous low budget. That would help them understand why we became fans ourselves. I have the entire series original prints on Laserdisc.
I was interested in seeing this, but the interrupting titling was infuriating. Halfway through the video, and you've only reached the credits?!?
IF I show more than cca 20 seconds there is a huge risk RUclips's copyright bots will block the video. I'm not pausing it for artistic reasons, but because I want to keep the video visible.
How come they didn't cgi the obviously fake lightning?
This is the most infuriatingly edited video I’ve seen on RUclips in months…
V'ger scared the hell out of me. The idea of being... absorbed...is terrifying.
The changing of the planet in the orbit view was nice, the rest was totally not necessary and added nothing.
The constant background if a moving star field and on the left and right sides if the comparison videos is really annoying!!!! ALOT!!!
Honestly, the CGI seems so out of place for this show. Sure it looks decent but it would be better suited for a more recent show, not something made in the 60s.
I prefer the original opening, tbh. The remastered episodes are beautiful, except scenes of the Enterprise and other ships in space. Then it's not that great looking CGI.
UUU!!!!!!! I Hate you people you unreal engine trekkies have pushed out of youtube the real virtual tour of the enterprise with Riker talking about the ship and crew and sure the images were grany and the angles of the shots off but that virtual tour was way better because of jonathan franks it was short and sweet and my personal favorite part was him talking about how he sometimes misses the point but keeps trying so I HATE YOU and I think i'm not alone in this AK
Is there a version that doesn’t censor the guy stabbed in the back?
Not this one, the first promo I saw (before the first broadcast, yes, I'm that old) had a scene from the green monster Kirk was fighting, and it called Spock a "half Vulcanian." With a short promo search, I no longer see it on RUclips. ;-(
Paramount and CBS Digital performed miracles on this set, and I'm so glad to have this on BD. I was born in 76, so I go to grow up on TOS reruns, the TOS era movies, and the broadcast premier of TNG and the rest. It's always amazing to see how much detail was locked away in the 35 mm OCN, just waiting to be revealed. So much great TV is locked away in "shot on film but finished on tape" hell, unfortunately.
Wish there was a director's cut version of the film released on dvd instead of blu ray because I don't have a player that plays that sort of disc 😢😭😭
The theatrical cut is much better.
I always prefer the original. It keeps with the general aesthetic of the show. The CGI is just as shimmery and unconvincing, like all CGI.
1:22 - The reason for the zoomed out shot was to get the technician on the left's reaction to the self destruct order. From what I understand, originally, he was in the shot, but when it came time to physically add in the audio track to the film, he was cropped out to make room. In the new cut, he was put back in so we could see someone else far more surprised reacting to the order.
Interesting. Makes sense.
Data almost escaped by himself
Seven minutes in and we are still watching credits...
It's possible that the extended dancing scene in the Menagerie was made up of unused footage. Remember, it wasn't made all that long after the Cage.
God, I hate remastered crap. It's not "remastered"; it's altered. Give me original or give me death!
The Engineering Chief seems like they'll go a long way
The realistic Earth is a big improvement. But the star field is too dim in the new version. I don't really care if it's "more realistic" or not - that aspect of the original looks better.
The color grading is SO much nicer in the Director’s Cut 👍
"Risk....Risk is our...business".. Amazing. And he led from the front beaming down with his top officers always. A bit reckless but it is risk taking. And William Shatner was amazing as Capt Kirk. I still thought Capt Janeway was the best Star fleet Captain but Kirk was iconic
Which one is the original the left or the right
@4:36 the audio ( the music of Ilia’s Theme) is not the same, not just out synch. I can hear the pitch changes they made.. not a fan. Do you have any idea how many times I listened to the Soundtrack album after seeing ST:TMP in the theaters? Sans VCRs of any sort in my household, I had to rely on the music and my imagination, to be transported (pun intended) back into the movie.
Great job!
The music is annoying
I actually prefer the starfield in original intro more vibrant less static than the revised version of the theme.
I prefer the DVD versión
I have always resented the updates… the original series was perfect the way it was
The Original is better ! This episode is excellent. Love Star Trek.
Hi, I love these comparisons. Not sure if you know, when they released the 4k TMP, they released a COMPLETE ADVENTURE version with The Special Longer Version and the Theatrical Version and The Director's Edition. Could you compare the VHS Special Longer Version vs the 4k/Blu-ray release? I read that they fixed the problems with the VHS release.
4:52......Riker's suggestion is actually valid. Firing on the Warbird forces them to hail you, and you can 'out negotiate' Pentara and force her to withdraw.
First off: Good work explaining, comparing & contrasting. Second. I have not yet seen the 2022 version, & I am watching this on an older laptop with a 17" screen. Third. Although the 2022 version is clearly admirable, and has some good elements, I prefer the overall look of the 2001 version. The 2022 version has less contrast, to my eye, and they have over-brightened the exterior shots of spaceships, space walking astronauts, shuttles, space stations, & the Klingon cruisers. They now have that false, much-too-well-lit look that is so common in space fantasy movies like Star Wars and so many others. Especially in scenes that do not take place near Earth or within a solar system. In the 2001 version, when they stop to receive Spock's shuttle (the physics of which is much underappreciated), the Enterprise is in an interstellar region, & it is obvious: the exterior angles show it as sitting in darkness, only illuminated here & there.. From what I've seen, they probably heightened the brightness in that scene in the 2022 version, & that is unfortunate. Part of what distinguisehd STTMP from so many other movies & indeed from the rest of the Star Trek films, was always that high-contrast, light & very dark, this-is-what-space-looks-like, visual aspect. Wise & Co. made a true science fiction film. It's too bad the studio leaned on them so hard that we'll never know what they could have truly accomplished, without people 40 years later trying to suss that out, and "fix" it.
In general I have to commend the team that worked on this, as they clearly tried extremely hard to be very respectful of the original material and recreate it as best they could. This is a VAST improvement to the horror show that was the original series remasters with all of the original effects totally discarded and replaced with tacky 2007 cgi. I'm happy to see that with Next Gen they actually tried to simply recreate the shots exactly as they were, but in higher resolution. This was done with love. We can nitpick at details, and true, I'm not in love with the digital model of the Enterprise D, but the fact that they even digitally matched the lighting that was on the physical model? That took a lot of time and care.
Well, 99% of the time these ARE the same effects, whenever they found the original elements, they re-scanned them in 1080p resolution and dihitally recomposited them. Only if they didn't find the elements, or that specific shot wasn't done on film, have they decided to re-create the shot using CGI.
@@TrekkieChannel They must've seen Galaxy Quest. They get it. "Historical Documents". The TOS team missed that memo.
